I’m busier than a one-armed juggler, even before I start thinking about sailing this weekend, so this newsletter is going to have to cover its many and various subjects and issues right away. There’s a lot on, so let’s get right into it.
October is a big month. We have our usual Club Championship heats, plus we have the Ray Tilbrook 10R Cup followed by the 10R State Championships next week at Austin Lakes. We have a DF 95 Shootout at Champion Lakes, and then we have the IOM State Championships over two days at Austin Lakes.
Whoops – stop the presses! I’ve just gone looking for the IOM States on the RSAWA website and it says it’s not on until late November. That’s a change that we should know about and we probably do, but your Secretary has let one through to the keeper without playing a shot.
Anyway, October is still pretty busy and the first group affected is the new Duty Team for the coming month. Officially the team (Team 5) is as follows: Bruce Quail (Team Captain), Lloyd Coles, Rod Moss, Edgar Vitte, Len White, Phil Brown, Fred Webber, Michael Howes, Trenn McCurry, but as some of you will have noted, Bruce Q has just completed a month of Duty Team action and has taken on the captaincy at late notice, so is looking forward to a break. Time for team members to step up and lend a hand when possible, and thanks go to Rod Moss already for stepping into the breach at short notice. (Note to all duty team members, as ever – remember that you’re still entitled to race when you’re on a duty team; it doesn’t have to mean that you miss a month of sailing, unless you want to do it that way.)
So, starting from tomorrow:
Thursday 01 October 2020: IOM and DF 95 Club Racing, at Jackadder Lake, from 2.00 pm. Weather: Possible Shower, Max 22, Cloudy. Medium (40%) chance of showers, most likely over the southern suburbs. Light winds becoming westerly 15 to 20 km/h in the middle of the day then becoming light in the evening.
Saturday 03 October 2020: IOM Club Championship Heat 7, at Jackadder Lake, from 2.00 pm. Weather: Partly Cloudy, Max 19, Slight (20%) chance of a shower in the northwest in the morning. Winds southerly 15 to 25 km/h.
Saturday 03 October: Ray Tilbrook 10R Memorial Trophy (and Heat 5 of the Club 10R Championships) from 9.30 am, at Maylands**. Weather: Partly Cloudy, Max 19, Slight (20%) chance of a shower in the northwest in the morning. Winds southerly 15 to 25 km/h.
** With the recent loss of racing depth at Jackadder for the Ten Raters, we are currently investigating moving the Ray Tilbrook Trophy to Maylands on Saturday. As we go to press, it’s just been confirmed that it will happen, but, in any case, the RSAWA needs 10R sailors to enter the event online ASAP so it can assess the size of the fleet. Perhaps now that the event has moved, some more sailors will enter.
The Duty Team should note that, if the 10R event moves to Maylands, it doesn’t have to move with it but can remain at Jackadder with the IOMs.
Sunday 04 October 2020: DF 95 Shootout Invitational, at Champion Lakes, from 2.00pm. Weather: Partly Cloudy, Winds southeasterly 15 to 20 km/h tending southerly 15 to 25 km/h during the day.
The Shootout is aimed at all DF 95 sailors, so if any Wanderers, Harrington Waters or Emu Lakes sailors are reading this, you’re invited too – the more the merrier to help keep building the class.
I was going to distribute and discuss some IOMICA papers for all you IOM sailors about upcoming class rule changes that you can vote on, but it’s a bit complicated and I can sense your attention span is already close to its limit, so I might make up a special and separate email to make your eyesight go blurry (except Bob, who just got his new eyes). There’s plenty of time before your vote has to come in anyway.
And speaking of surgery, my truck is in for minor surgery tomorrow so my presence at lakeside is unlikely. But it and I will be resurrected by the weekend, so your respite will be brief.
