Ten Rater Metropolitan Championships 2014

2014 Perth Metropolitan Ten Rater Championships – Austin Lakes WA

Most people reading the forecast for Sunday 6 July in Mandurah, would have decided to stay home and keep warm and dry. However, ten hardy optimists ventured to Austin Lakes for a day of fast, wet Ten Rater racing. The rain started during the drive down the freeway, where it got so heavy that visibility was severely reduced. Luckily, the first front passed over before we got to the lake.

The fleet consisted of 4 Diamonds, a couple of Blades and Aeros, as well as a Creed Defector and a NRW3. Rosco Bennett was competing in his first Ten Rater event, having purchased Ian Holt’s Diamond for Andree. Fortunately for Rosco, Andree let him sail it today.

At the start of the day, most boats had their B rigs up, which was the right rig for race 1, but fairly soon, the wind dropped so that Mewsie and Rosco, who had their A rigs up, featured in the next few races. Graeme Howie was sailing consistently as usual.

Jeff Green had a slow start in the first two races, but quickly got into gear, coming to the front of the fleet, and logging up plenty of podium finishes. Meanwhile, Rosco took off like he had been sailing these things for years, selecting the right rig and getting good starts.

During the morning, most boats changed rigs at least once, stepping down from their starting rig to a smaller one. At lunch, the wind another front came through, and behind it, the wind fell away. We all put A rigs on, but nobody was certain just how long that would last. We did get in about 5 or 6 races with the A rigs up before the next front came in.

At times, Ian Sherriff, John Goor and Denton Roberts showed terrific speed and were pushing the leaders. The quality of the fleet will only improve, as we sail Tens more frequently, and these guys will be hard to beat. Rob Mews didn’t really have the conditions for his boat today, but remains very competitive in the lighter winds.

Unfortunately, Ian Holt did some damage to his rigs today and will have some repair work to do. Andrew Crocker was persevering with his solid wing rig on the Blade. From time to time, the speed is pretty good, but he suffers when the wind is variable.

Over the day, PRO Roger Paul managed to get in 21 races, in what can only be described as wet and challenging conditions. Courses were generally very good and fair and the wind was clean, but quite shifty. Thanks to Roger, Bob Paton and Andree Bennett, who spent their time volunteering to help run the regatta so we all could sail.

Thanks also to West Coast RYC for allowing Champion Lakes RS to use their boat and to Ian Sherriff for towing it to the lake. Ian certainly saved us other CLRS members a great deal of work.

I only wish that someone had taken a photo of Rosco trying to launch his Ten for the first time – he clearly hadn’t worked out just how much deeper you have to go to launch a Ten, compared to an IOM – enough said, as the image was not pretty!

The final result showed that consistency consistently wins these regattas. Rosco had a great day for his maiden win, followed by Jeff Green and Graeme Howie.
